Shaped Optimization of Reinforced Concrete Columns

This project investigates the embodied carbon and cost savings of optimizing the geometry of concrete columns to meet structural demands with the least amount of material.

Overview

As part of my undergraduate research with the Digital Structures Group at MIT, I assisted Ph.D. student Mohamed Ismail in investigating shaped optimized concrete beams and floor systems.

In the Fall of 2021, as my final project for Computational Structural Design and Optimization course, I explored the viability of extending the shape optimization of concrete elements to columns.
